Located in the city of Saiwai, Niigata Prefecture is not the correct location. However, in the correct location in 新潟県 (Niigara prefecture), 天満宮 was originally built as a sacred place to pray for good luck and prosperity. The shrine is dedicated to Tamamo no Okuni, a legendary female ninja from Japanese history. The shrine's main hall, called the Haiden, features traditional architecture with a tiled roof and a distinctive curved eave.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's significance, visitors should make an offering of 'tsutsugaki' (a sweet rice cake) at the tamagaki (rice cake counter), a unique tradition practiced by locals and visitors alike.
Cultural notes
Tamamo no Okuni is celebrated during the Obon festival in August. Visitors can also experience traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, which are often held at the shrine's teahouse.
