Takamatsu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the heart of Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to Takamatsuhiko-no-mikoto, a deity believed to be the god of wisdom and poetry. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical significance as a center of Buddhist learning and culture during the Heian period. Visitor tip
Visitors should not forget to bring a small gift of sake or fruit to be offered at the main altar, as is customary when visiting Shinto shrines.
Cultural notes
Takamatsu Shrine is also famous for its connection to the legendary Japanese poet Ariwara no Narihira, who allegedly visited the shrine during his exile. The shrine is also a popular destination during the annual Matsuri festival in November, where participants dress up in traditional costumes and perform rituals to honor Takamatsuhiko-no-mikoto.
