開山社

Ishikawa

開山社 is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Katsuyama, Ishikawa Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the kami Enma, known as the ruler of Hell, and is believed to offer blessings for safe passage on one's journey through life. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical significance as a major stopping point for travelers on the ancient route between Echizen Province and Kaga Domain.

Enma is often depicted as a stern and powerful deity who judges the worthiness of souls for entry into the afterlife. At Opening Mountain Shrine, visitors may offer prayers for safe passage on their own life journeys by leaving ema tokens at the shrine's entrance.

Historical note

The shrine was built in the 7th century during the Asuka period, making it one of the oldest shrines in Ishikawa Prefecture.
