Located in the heart of Dazaifu, Dayo no Kami Taisha is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and her husband, the storm god Susanoo. Dating back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE), this shrine showcases traditional Japanese architecture and is famous for its unique stone lanterns and ornate gates.

Visitor tip

For visitors with mobility issues, there is a wheelchair-accessible path leading from the main gate to the inner shrine. Be sure to purchase a special ticket (, tokai) at the main gate to enter the inner shrine area.

Cultural notes

The shrine is said to be the birthplace of Dayo no Kami, a deity believed to have been born in this shrine and later enshrined here. The shrine also hosts an annual festival, which features traditional dances and performances to honor the sun goddess and her husband.
