Located in the heart of Fukuoka, Ume River Shrine (Ume no Mai, or ''Ume no Shinshin'' in its original name) is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of fertility, prosperity, and good fortune, Ōkuninushi. While its origins date back to the 7th century, it has undergone numerous renovations throughout the centuries. The shrine's current structure dates back to the Meiji period (1868-1912).

Cultural notes
Ōkuninushi is also revered as the god of agriculture and is associated with the myth of Ōkagutsuchi, the fire god. The shrine's architecture reflects its connection to the river and the nearby city, blending traditional Japanese design with modern touches.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 712 as a Buddhist temple dedicated to the goddess of mercy, Yakushi-nyorai.
