Located in the heart of Fukuoka, 乙野天満宮 is a prominent Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of war, Tenjin, and the god of prosperity, Hachiman. The shrine's name, '乙野', refers to the nearby Banna forest, which is said to be the birthplace of the legendary hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune, for whom the shrine was originally built. Over the centuries, the shrine has undergone several renovations and expansions, including a major reconstruction in the 17th century during the Edo period. Cultural notes
As a Shinto shrine, 乙野天満宮 is closely tied to the mythology of Japan's founding legend, the Minamoto no Yoshitsune mythos. The shrine is also famous for its annual Tenjin Matsuri festival, which takes place in July and features elaborate floats, traditional music, and dancing.
