Ishikawa

Katsuragi Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Katsuragi, Ishikawa Prefecture. Dedicated to the deity Ryujin, the sea dragon king, it is said to have been established during the Heian period (794-1185). The shrine's name literally translates to 'pine forest stream shrine'.

Cultural notes

Ryujin is associated with fertility and prosperity. During the Obon festival, the shrine is said to be particularly active, as Ryujin is believed to protect fishermen and bring good luck to those who pray for safe passage at sea.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in its current form after a fire in 1889.
