駒形神社

Aomori

Located in Aomori Prefecture, 駒形神社 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of good luck and prosperity. The shrine is situated at the base of Mount Iwaki, which is said to be the home of the goddess Iwaku Hime. According to legend, the shrine was established in 1601 by the daimyo (feudal lord) Akita Masatsugu, who built a temple on the site before it was converted into a Shinto shrine.

Visitor tip

For visitors arriving by train, take the JR Aomori Line from Shin-Aomori Station and get off at the Iwaki-Tombi Station. From there, walk north for about 2 km to reach the shrine.

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its stunning autumn foliage, with the changing colors of the maple trees attracting visitors from all over Japan. The shrine also hosts a New Year's festival (Shinbasho Matsuri) in January, where participants dress up in traditional costumes and perform traditional dances.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt and renovated several times throughout its history, with the current structure dating back to the late Edo period.
