Cultural notes
As a Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari Okami, Fushimi Inari is famous for its annual autumn leaves festival, and visitors can tie purple ribbons on the torii gates as offerings to Inari. The shrine's unique architecture features thousands of small shrines, called 'fox dens', dedicated to the fox kami, a common companion deity of Inari.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 711 as Fushimi Shrine, but it has undergone several renovations throughout its history.
