Chiyose Hachiman Shrine, located in Aomori Prefecture, is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan, with a history dating back to the Heian period (794-1185). Dedicated to the god of war and justice, Hachiman Okami, it is said to have been built by a prince who was known for his kindness and fairness. The shrine's architecture reflects the traditional style of Japanese temples from that era, with a wooden torii gate and a large rectangular hall. Over time, the shrine has undergone several renovations and expansions, including one in 1889 to modernize its facilities.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Hachiman Okami is said to be the patron deity of soldiers and samurai. The shrine hosts an annual festival called 'Aomori Hakosetsu', which takes place in July and features traditional dances, music, and food. Visitors can also explore the shrine's museum, which houses artifacts related to the god Hachiman Okami.
