Cultural notes
Kumano Jinja is said to be the site where the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a prominent deity in Shinto mythology, descended upon the earth. The shrine also hosts various festivals throughout the year, including the Kumano Odori dance performance and the Sanja Matsuri.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) as a humble torii gate, but it was later rebuilt and expanded into its current form during the Edo period (1603-1868 CE).
