八幡神社

Located in Kyoto, Eight Horses Temple Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto deity of wind and storms, Hikoboshi. This shrine was originally built to pray for safe passage over the river that separates the world of humans from the spirits' realm. The current structure dates back to 1598, during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Visitors can take a stroll through the adjacent Higashiyama Park, which offers beautiful views of Kyoto.

Visitor tip

To avoid crowds, visit during the off-season or early morning to admire the beautiful autumn foliage in the surrounding park.

Cultural notes

Hikoboshi is also associated with the legend of the 'Festival of Reunification,' which takes place on the seventh day of the seventh month. During this time, lanterns are hung from the shrine's gates to guide Hikoboshi across the river back to his home in the spirit world.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1598 by Tokugawa Ieyasu's son, Hidetada.
