Cultural notes
Susa Shrine is famous for its association with Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the storm god who was said to have created the ocean by striking his sister Amaterasu's umbrella. According to legend, Susanoo would visit the shrine each year during the Obon festival to hunt for fish in the nearby Susa River.
Historical note
The shrine was built in 1869 by the Tokugawa shogunate to commemorate the emperor Meiji's visit.
