Located in the city of Fukuoka, Hie Shrine is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and her children, the storm god Susanoo and the wind god Inazuma. The shrine's current structure dates back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE), although it has undergone several renovations and reconstructions over the centuries.

Visitor tip
To get a glimpse of the shrine's famous bronze bell, which is said to bring good luck, ring the bell before making an offering at the shrine's main hall.
Cultural notes
Hie Shrine is famous for its beautiful vermilion torii gate and its association with the mythological storm god Susanoo. The shrine also hosts a popular summer festival called the 'Tenjin Matsuri', which honors the god of learning and intelligence, Susano-o.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1928 after being severely damaged during World War II.
