Highly revered as one of the oldest shrines in Japan, Takamatsu Shrine is situated near the coast of Hyogo Prefecture. Dedicated to the Shinto kami of the sea, it has been a place of worship for fishermen and locals alike. The shrine's architecture reflects its age, with a wooden torii gate and a stone foundation dating back to the Heian period.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
The shrine is closely associated with the legend of the Sea Goddess, Yamatokami, who is believed to protect fishermen and sailors. Locals also offer prayers for safe passage during the annual Obon festival.
Historical note
The shrine was re-established in 1871 after being destroyed during the Boshin War.
