Gunma

Toshogu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of NikkĦ, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1617 as a mausoleum for himself and his three wives. Toshogu is famous for its ornate architecture, beautiful gardens, and extensive collection of art and artifacts.

Cultural notes

The shrine is dedicated to Tokugawa Iemitsu, not Toshogu. It was built in 1629-1633 as a mausoleum for Tokugawa Iemitsu and features unique architectural style known as Toshogu-zukuri which influences Kamakura zukuri.
