Miyajidani Taisha is a Shinto shrine located in Miyajima Island, Shimane Prefecture, which was once part of the Honshu mainland. The shrine's history dates back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE), and it has been rebuilt several times due to natural disasters. The current main hall was constructed during the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE). Miyajidani Taisha is famous for its large torii gate, which is said to be one of the largest in Japan. The shrine is also known for its unique architecture, featuring a distinctive red-colored main hall and a long wooden bridge over the sea.

Visitor tip
To witness the iconic sun rise or sunset over the sea, arrive at least 30 minutes before the event. Bring a blanket to sit on during the ceremony and enjoy the stunning views.
Cultural notes
Miyajidani Taisha is dedicated to the Shinto kami of the sea, Ryujin, as well as the Sun Goddess Amaterasu. The shrine hosts an annual festival in spring, where visitors can participate in traditional dances and games. The long wooden bridge over the sea is said to be a sacred path for the kami.

The shrine was rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1933 CE.
