The Eight-Horned Shrine, located in the city of Nagahama in Shiga Prefecture, is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines. Dedicated to Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, and Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the storm god, it is said that the shrine was built on the site where a large whirlpool appeared during a storm, indicating the presence of these two kami. The shrine is particularly renowned for its beautiful vermilion torii gate, which stands out against the white-painted buildings in the traditional Japanese style.

Visitor tip
Visitors can purchase a special ticket that allows them to access the shrine at night when it is illuminated by thousands of twinkling lights, creating a magical atmosphere.
Cultural notes
The Eight-Horned Shrine is known for its unique association with the mythical bird Tengu, said to have been worshipped here. In December, the shrine holds a traditional festival called Yabusame, where participants clad in Tengu costumes shoot arrows at straw dummies while riding horses.
Historical note
The shrine was originally established in 593 AD by Emperor Bidatsu and was rebuilt several times throughout Japan's history, with the current structure dating back to the Edo period. The shrine has been designated as a National Treasure of Japan since 1939.
