Chinami-jinja Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Sanyo, Hyogo Prefecture. The shrine was originally built to enshrine the god of the well, Chinami-Okami, who protected the local villagers from drought and famine. Over time, the shrine also came to enshrine other kami, including the god of the sea, Shisa no Kami. The shrine is known for its beautiful gardens and traditional Japanese architecture.

Visitor tip

Visit the shrine's main hall during the summer months to see the beautiful vermilion torii gate, which is adorned with flowers and lanterns.

Cultural notes

Chinami-jinja Shrine is one of several shrines in Hyogo Prefecture dedicated to the god of the well. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in July to celebrate the summer solstice and the protection of the local villagers.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in the Heian period (794-1185 CE) after being destroyed by a fire.
