Located in the town of Nakoshi in Tottori Prefecture, Hibiya Okami Shrine is dedicated to Okami-no-oki-tachibana-gami, a Shinto deity associated with local folklore. Visitor tip
Visit the shrine during the annual Hibiya Okami Festival in May, where locals dress up in traditional costumes and perform ritual dances to honor the deity. Be sure to try some of the local delicacies, such as sanma (cherry blossom) sweets, which are offered as a prayer offering.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its beautiful cherry blossom trees, which bloom every spring and attract many visitors. According to local legend, the deity Okami-no-oki-tachibana-gami was said to have appeared to a fisherman in the area, who then became a powerful spiritual leader.
Historical note
Founded during the Edo period (1603-1867), the shrine was established to commemorate the visit of Emperor Meiji's father, Emperor Kōmei, who passed through the area while on a journey to Nakamura.
