Cultural notes
Nose no Makihito is said to have been a loyal servant of the great daimyo Uesugi Kenshin. According to legend, Kenshin was saved by Nose no Makihito during battle, and as a reward, he was granted a large tract of land in what is now Gunma Prefecture.

The shrine was originally built in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) and has undergone numerous restorations throughout its history.
