To fully appreciate the shrine's serene atmosphere, arrive during sunrise when the mist from Lake Biwa has lifted.
Cultural notes
This shrine is dedicated to three principal kami: Yamato no Okami, Susanoo no Mikoto, and Inazuma-tenno. It is also famous for its beautiful vermilion torii gate, which was built in 1612. During the spring festival (Matsuri), visitors can witness a ritual dance performed by shrine staff to honor the kami.
Historical note
Founded in 645 CE by Prince Shotoku, who introduced Buddhism and Shintoism to Japan.
