指扇氷川神社

指扇氷川神社 is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Mikage, Gunma Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the water god Enmei and also enshrines the kami of the surrounding area, including Tamayama no Okami and Fujisan no Kami. The shrine's architecture reflects its location near the Sagawa River, with a wooden torii gate and a shrine hall built in the traditional Koshinji style. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the river and surrounding mountains.

Cultural notes

Enmei is a kami often associated with water and purification. Tamayama no Okami is believed to be a powerful kami who protects travelers on the mountain roads that connect the shrine to nearby cities. Fujisan no Kami is thought to be a variant of the Fujiwara no Kanezane, a notable samurai from the Kamakura period.

The shrine was established during the Edo period (1603-1868).
