Cultural notes

Mika-no-Tsurugi is said to be the sword used by Prince Mika no Osami in battle, who was betrayed and killed by his brother. The legend states that Mika's spirit haunts this site, seeking revenge against those who have wronged him. This unique mythological connection is reflected in the shrine's name, 'Noto-sa', meaning 'place where Mika's sword lies'.

Historical note

Founded in the Heian period (794-1185 CE), Noto-sa has a long history dating back to the reign of Emperor Ichijō.
