Andanaso Shrine, dedicated to the Shinto deity of fertility and prosperity, is located in the town of Matsue in Shimane Prefecture. Built on the site of an ancient temple, the current shrine complex dates back to the Edo period. The shrine is famous for its beautifully crafted wooden torii gate and serene gardens.

Visitor tip
Visitors can purchase an omamori, a small charm, at the shrine shop to ward off evil spirits on their way back to Matsue.
Cultural notes
Andanaso Shrine is connected to the mythology of the Matsue region, which is said to be inhabited by the Shinto spirit, Yamatano Orochi. The shrine is also famous for its unique festival, the Andanaso Shrine Festival, which takes place in September and features traditional dances and offerings.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by a fire in the late Edo period.
