Kumano-san Shrine, located in Nagata-cho, Koka, Shiga Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest and most revered shrines dedicated to the god Kumano Okami. The shrine was originally built in the Heian period (794-1185 CE), during the reign of Emperor Saga. Over time, it has undergone several renovations and expansions, with notable restorations made during the Edo period (1603-1867 CE). Today, the shrine is famous for its majestic vermilion torii gate and beautiful gardens.

Visitor tip
When visiting the shrine, be sure to bow upon entering and leaving, and make an offering at the temizuya water purification station before approaching the main torii gate.
Cultural notes
Kumano-san Shrine is deeply connected to the mythology of Kumano Okami, a powerful kami believed to reside in the Kii Peninsula. The shrine also hosts the annual Kumano-mairi pilgrimage festival in March, which attracts thousands of devotees seeking spiritual purification and good fortune.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1889 after a fire destroyed the main hall.
