Cultural notes

While Toshogu Shrine is not as well-known for its festivals as some other Shinto shrines, it does host a seasonal festival in autumn (known as 'Iwaki no Matsuri') to celebrate the harvest season. The festival features traditional dances and games, as well as offerings to the kami of the mountain.

Historical note

The shrine was founded during the Edo period (1603-1867) and was previously dedicated to the god of Mount Iwaki, but has since been re-dedicated to the kami of the mountain itself.
