稲荷上乃社

Located in the city of Chuo, Chiba Prefecture, 稲荷上乃社 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari Okami, the kami of rice, industry, and fertility. As one of the oldest shrines in Japan, it has been an important center for worship and community gatherings for centuries.

Visitor tip

Inari Okami is often depicted with many fox tails, which symbolize fertility and prosperity. The shrine is famous for its thousands of vermilion lanterns that illuminate the grounds at night, creating a beautiful and serene atmosphere.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 718 CE during the Nara period as a branch shrine of the nearby Todaiji Temple.
