Cultural notes
As one of Japan's five sacred sites for the gods Hachiman and Susanoo, the Eight-Horned Shrine plays a significant role in Shinto mythology. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in April, where participants carry a large vermilion pole called a 'yatai' through the streets of Choshi.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 718 AD by the Prince Nagaya, and has since been rebuilt several times due to fires and natural disasters.
