Cultural notes
Kotohira Shrine is deeply connected to the mythology of the Taira clan, a powerful samurai family in Japanese history. According to legend, Hachiman appeared to the Taira clan's leader, Mochihito, and helped them defeat their enemies in battle.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 712 during the Nara period and rebuilt several times, including a significant reconstruction after the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923.
