Kasuga Shrine, located in Kinu City, Chiba Prefecture, is one of Japan's most famous and historic Shinto shrines. Dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Ōmikami, Kasuga Shrine was originally built as a temple during the Heian period (794-1185 CE). After being destroyed by a fire in 1496 CE, the shrine was rebuilt in its current form during the Edo period (1603-1867 CE), featuring iconic vermilion torii gates and a sprawling complex of shrines dedicated to various deities. Kasuga Shrine is also notable for its unique architectural style, which blends elements of Japanese and Chinese influences.

Visitor tip
