Chikatsuyu-oji

Nara

This historic *oji* shrine along the sacred Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route serves as a crucial spiritual waystation where travelers have paused for centuries to pray for safe passage and divine protection. Enshrining the Kumano deities, it holds particular significance as one of the ninety-nine *oji* (prince) shrines that guide pilgrims on their journey to the main Kumano Sanzan shrines. Modern visitors and pilgrims still stop here to seek blessings for their spiritual journey and to connect with the ancient tradition of *yamabushi* mountain worship that has sanctified this path for over a millennium.
