Cultural notes
As one of Japan's oldest shrines dedicated to Amaterasu, the Shinto goddess of the sun, Atami Imamiya Shrine is also closely associated with the reverence for the sea and its bounty. During the Obon festival in August, visitors can participate in traditional dances and ceremonies to honor the spirits of their ancestors.
