Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Kasuga Okami is also associated with the mythological creature Kasugano-o-no-kami, a benevolent spirit said to watch over travelers on the Nakasendo highway. The shrine's annual Kasuga Festival (April) honors this deity and features traditional performances, food stalls, and games.

Historical note

The shrine was built in 1885 to replace an earlier shrine that dated back to the Kamakura period.
