Located in the heart of Hyogo Prefecture, Hachiman Shrine in Nishinomiya City is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines. As the main shrine dedicated to the god of war, Hachiman is often depicted as a powerful deity riding a white horse. However, another prominent Shinto shrine in this region is the Yumebachi Shrine in Toyokawa, Hyogo Prefecture. It is also known as the Shrine of 8000 Buddhas, but it mainly honors the Buddhist deities. Cultural notes
One of its most distinctive features is the magnificent main gate known as the 'tsugumi,' a traditional Shinto gate with sliding doors made from cedar wood. The shrine also holds an annual festival in May called 'Makura-san Matsuri' to honor the god Hachiman, who is believed to have visited the site.
