Visitor tip
When visiting the shrine, take a moment to observe the traditional Japanese lanterns along the path leading up to the main hall, and be sure to bow respectfully before making an offering at one of the many shrines within the complex.
Cultural notes
Inari is revered as a protector of farmers and harvesters, and visitors can make offerings of rice and other grains to seek good fortune. The shrine also hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the Mito Inari Matsuri, which celebrates the patron saint of Mito city.
Historical note
The shrine was originally established in 718 by Emperor Shōmu as part of his efforts to reunite the north and south parts of Japan.
