Cultural notes
Hachiman shrines are among the most numerous in Japan, dedicated to the deified Emperor Ojin who became known as Hachiman, the god of war and divine protection. Originally a syncretic deity combining Shinto and Buddhist elements, Hachiman became particularly popular among the samurai class.
