Historical note

Sugawara no Michizane (845-903) was a prominent court scholar and politician who was exiled to Kyushu, where he died. After his death, he was deified as Tenjin and became widely venerated across Japan. Tenjin shrines were established throughout the country to honor his spirit and seek his blessing for scholarly pursuits.
