Located in the city of Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Eight Horseshoe Shrine is one of Japan's most famous and historic Shinto shrines. Dedicated to the kami Amaterasu Ōmikami, it is also revered for its association with the legendary hero Minamoto no Yoritomo, who founded the Kamakura shogunate in 1185. The shrine's architecture reflects its long history, with various sections and reconstructions dating back to the Heian period (794-1185). Its iconic Eight Horseshoe Gate is a symbol of the shrine and can be seen from far away.

Visitor tip
For those visiting in June, consider attending the annual Soga Matsuri festival to see the shrine's famous Horseshoe Gate adorned with colorful lanterns and decorated with offerings of gold coins and other treasures.
Cultural notes
Eight Horseshoe Shrine is closely associated with the legendary hero Minamoto no Yoritomo, who built a castle on the nearby site of Kanzaki Castle. The shrine's sacred trees are believed to have been planted by Yoritomo himself.
