Godaiji-san, or Godai Shrine, is a Shinto shrine located in the heart of Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture. Dedicated to the kami Amaterasu, the shrine dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867) and boasts a beautiful garden and traditional Japanese architecture.

Cultural notes
As an important Shinto site, Godaiji-san is connected to the mythology of the Amaterasu, the sun goddess. During the Obon festival, lanterns are placed at the shrine entrance to guide the spirits of ancestors back home.
