Shizuoka

Located in the city of Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture, Okawachi Inari Shrine is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines dedicated to the rice goddess, Inari Okami. The shrine complex covers over 22 acres and boasts numerous structures including a large torii gate, beautiful gardens, and numerous shrine halls. Inari is the primary deity enshrined within the shrine.

Visitor tip

To make the most of your visit, try to arrive early and avoid the crowds by entering through the eastern gate.

Cultural notes

Okawachi Inari Shrine is known for its large number of shrines dedicated to various regional kami. The shrine's festival, called 'Matsuri', takes place in May and features traditional performances, food stalls, and a grand procession through the streets.

Historical note

The current main hall was rebuilt in 1632 during the Edo period, following a fire that destroyed the previous structure.
