Visitor tip

Visit during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) to witness the stunning blooming of over 3,000 sakura trees surrounding the shrine.

Cultural notes

Star Castle Shrine is said to be connected to the legend of the heavenly messenger, Ōkuninushi, who was believed to reside within its walls. The shrine also hosts a traditional Japanese festival, the 'Ōya Matsuri,' which takes place in late autumn and features colorful lanterns and traditional performances.

Historical note

Established in 1601 as a mausoleum for the Mito Ario family's ancestral temple.
