Visitor tip

To avoid the heat of summer, visit Taka Ryū Jinja early in the morning or late in the evening to witness the beautiful sunsets and illuminated lanterns.

Cultural notes

The shrine's architecture is inspired by the traditional Japanese style of 'tsukubai' water basins, which are believed to purify the mind and soul. During the summer solstice festival, locals reenact an ancient legend about Ryūjin defeating a giant serpent in the nearby Sakudaira River.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 1714 during the Edo period, when it was rebuilt after being destroyed by a flood.
