Shizuoka

Yamazu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Iwata, Shizuoka Prefecture. Dedicated to Inari Okami, the shrine is famous for its beautiful vermilion torii gates and is considered one of Japan's most iconic landmarks. The shrine is also known for its unique architecture, featuring a distinctive curved roof and wooden pillars.

Visitor tip

To avoid long lines, visit the shrine early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is not directly overhead.

Cultural notes

Yamazu Shrine is closely associated with the myth of Inari Okami, who is said to have taken the form of a fox. During the New Year (Oshogatsu) festival, visitors bring offerings of sake and rice to honor the kami.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1961 after the original structure was destroyed in an earthquake.
