Located in Kamakura, Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of the most famous Shinto shrines in Japan, dedicated to the god of rice and prosperity, Inari Okami. Cultural notes
Fushimi Inari Shrine is famous for its unique tradition of 'torii gate painting', where visitors paint green paint on the gates to commemorate their visit and wish for good luck. The shrine is also known for its numerous festivals throughout the year, including the Inari Matsuri festival in May.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 711 as a small temple dedicated to En no Ōsonae, a Shinto deity associated with fertility and rice, but it was later rebuilt in 1467 during the Muromachi period and transformed into an Inari Shrine.
