Cultural notes
Katsura-plain Shrine is closely associated with Hachiman, who was revered for his protection of soldiers and his role as a god of war. During the Edo period, the shrine became famous for its beautiful gardens, which were especially popular among Japanese artists and writers. Today, the shrine still hosts festivals in honor of Hachiman, including the annual 'Hachiman Matsuri' in March.
Historical note
Founded in 757 AD by Emperor Shomu, who transferred the original deity from the nearby Miharu Shrine to this location.
