Gokayama's 諏訪神社 is a Shinto shrine located in the heart of Japan's ancient village, known for its well-preserved traditional architecture and stunning natural surroundings. As one of the oldest shrines in Niigata Prefecture, it has been an important spiritual center for locals since the Heian period (794-1185 CE). Visitor tip

Cultural notes
As Enma is believed to preside over the afterlife, the shrine hosts a special festival called 'Enma no Saiten' on October 12th, where locals pay respects to their ancestors and seek guidance for the deceased. The shrine's distinctive thatched roof and wooden construction have been preserved in their original form.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1606 during the Edo period (1603-1867 CE) following a devastating flood that destroyed the original structure.
