Big Wave Eight Horseshoe Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of industry, prosperity, and good luck. Located in the heart of Setagaya ward in western Tokyo, it is known for its beautiful garden and historic architecture. The shrine's current structure dates back to 1904, although it is believed that a previous temple stood on the site since the Edo period. In Shinto mythology, the shrine is associated with the god of industry, Benzaiten, who is revered as a symbol of creativity and prosperity.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's garden, visit early in the morning or late in the evening when the sunlight filters through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground.
Cultural notes
In addition to Benzaiten, the shrine also enshrines Hachiman, the god of war and health, as well as several other kami. The shrine hosts a biennial festival in August, featuring traditional dances, music, and food stalls selling local delicacies.
