Located in the heart of Tokyo, Shinmei-ya is one of the oldest shrines in Japan, dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868). Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's gardens, plan to visit early in the morning or late in the evening when the soft light highlights the carefully raked gravel paths and beautifully pruned trees.
Cultural notes
Ōkuninushi is often depicted as a strong warrior-god who was said to have possessed supernatural strength. In the shrine's mythology, he is believed to protect travelers and locals alike from harm. During the spring equinox festival (Shunbun no Hi), visitors can experience traditional dances and rituals honoring Ōkuninushi.
