丹生高野神社

Wakayama

This ancient shrine serves as the spiritual guardian of Mount Koya, enshrining Niu Myojin (Niutsuhime-no-Mikoto), the local kami who granted the sacred mountain to Kobo Daishi for establishing his Buddhist monastery. As one of Japan's most significant examples of shinbutsu-shugo (Shinto-Buddhist syncretism), it bridges the indigenous Shinto tradition with esoteric Buddhism, where pilgrims and monks have sought blessings for spiritual protection and enlightenment for over 1,200 years. Visitors come to pay respects to the benevolent deity who made Mount Koya's transformation into a sacred Buddhist center possible, seeking guidance for spiritual journeys and protection during mountain pilgrimages.
